5. False ceilings and cove lighting: what they’re actually for
Plasterboard false ceilings are a common choice in Singapore HDB renovations β light, easy to finish, and they let downlights sit flush. Cove lighting (sometimes called an L-box) is a raised edge built into the false ceiling that hides a light strip inside it, producing a soft “glow along the edge” effect, most often seen in living rooms.
One detail that’s easy to miss: false ceilings and cove details aren’t purely decorative. In many BTO flats, aircon piping and refrigerant lines run along the ceiling edge, and a false ceiling or L-box is a common way to conceal that piping β not just a lighting choice.
