Gas vs Electric Water Heater in Singapore: How to Choose

Quick answer: Gas water heaters need a gas supply and installation by City Energy or a Licensed Gas Service Worker, but they typically heat water instantly at the tap without a storage tank. Electric water heaters split into two types β€” instant (no tank, heats on demand) and storage (heats and holds a tank of hot water) β€” and don’t need a gas connection at all. Which one fits your home usually comes down to whether you already have a gas point in the right spot, and whether you want the speed of gas or the simplicity of an electric setup. This guide walks through both, what we carry, and what to check before you order.

1. The basic difference: how each one heats water

An electric water heater uses an electric heating element, either warming water as it passes through (instant type, no tank) or heating a tank of water and keeping it hot until you draw from it (storage type). A gas water heater burns gas β€” supplied through your home’s existing gas piping β€” to heat water as it flows through, without needing a storage tank.

Because a gas water heater draws on your gas supply rather than your home’s electrical circuit, it needs to be connected to a gas point, and any work on gas pipes or gas appliances has requirements electric water heaters simply don’t: it isn’t a plug-and-play installation. We’ll get into what that means for you below.

2. What we carry: gas water heaters

We currently stock four gas water heater models β€” three of them WiFi/app-controlled and one straightforward non-smart option. Here’s what’s on the gas and electric water heater range right now:

Smart Gas Water Heater Life by City Energy (L10WFE) β€” one of our WiFi-enabled options, controllable through an app, with a touch control panel on the unit itself. Per its product listing: temperature range 35Β°C–55Β°C, minimum flow rate 2.2L/min, water pressure 2 Bar, runs off a 13 Amp power point (230V AC / 50Hz), and carries local warranty. It’s built for multi-point use (more than one tap or shower point off a single unit) and lists HDB as its stated residence type.

MOWE Macro Smart Gas Water Heater (10MWFE) β€” the smart features here are function-focused rather than appearance-focused: remote timer control, usage and error notifications, remote shutdown, and power consumption monitoring, all through the MOWE app. Rated 220–240V, 50/60Hz, 4800W.

MOWE Macro Smart Gas Water Heater (MA-10WFE) β€” another WiFi/app-controlled option in the same smart range. Per its listing: temperature setting 36Β°C–55Β°C, water pressure 0.02MPa–0.8MPa, 13 Amp power point, automatic instantaneous heating, multi-point usage, HDB listed as residence type, and available in black, grey or white.

MOWE Macro Gas Water Heater (MA-10FE) β€” the non-smart option in the range, for households that just want a working gas water heater without app controls. Per its listing: temperature setting 36Β°C–55Β°C, water pressure 0.02MPa–0.8MPa, 13 Amp power point, automatic instantaneous heating, HDB listed as residence type, 2 usage points.

None of our gas heater listings publish an ignition type (electronic vs. pilot light), so we’ve left it out rather than guess β€” if it matters for your decision, ask our team before you order and we’ll check with the supplier.

3. What we carry: electric water heaters

Our water heater range also includes electric instant heaters (no tank, heats on demand, typically installed at the shower point) and electric storage heaters (a tank that holds a set volume β€” the models we carry range from 15L to 35L β€” and keeps it heated for use throughout the day). Neither type needs a gas connection, which is often the simplest reason a household chooses electric: no gas piping to plan around, no gas installer to schedule.

Rather than rank gas against electric, we’d point out that they solve different problems β€” the right one depends on what’s already in your home (gas point or not), how many people are drawing hot water at once, and how you’d rather manage installation.

4. Installation: who can do the work

This is the part that genuinely differs between the two types, and it’s worth understanding before you buy.

Gas water heaters: according to the Energy Market Authority (EMA), “for residential premises, gas installation works can only be carried out by City Energy or a Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW)” (ema.gov.sg, checked 20 Sep 2026). In practice, this means you can’t simply plug in a gas water heater the way you would an electric one β€” someone qualified needs to connect it to your gas supply. On our own City Energy L10WFE listing, the installation process is handled through City Energy directly: once you order, City Energy contacts you (their listing states this can take up to 5 working days) to schedule the work, and there are different installation scenarios depending on whether you’re replacing an existing gas heater or installing one for the first time.

Whether a gas water heater can go where you want it β€” and what work is involved to get there β€” depends on your unit’s layout and existing gas piping. That’s genuinely a case-by-case question, not something a general guide can answer for every home, so it’s worth having someone look at your specific space before you commit.

HDB or condo β€” who can install

Requirements differ slightly depending on your unit type. Per EMA’s FAQ: “City Energy can only assist to install exposed gas pipes in HDB premises, as well as gas appliances in both HDB and private premises. For all other installation of gas pipes and appliances, you will need to engage a Licensed Gas Service Worker.” (ema.gov.sg, checked 20 Sep 2026)

For condo owners specifically, EMA’s gas safety guidance notes: “For condominiums, please obtain a layout plan from the estate management to ascertain the location of concealed gas pipes before any drilling or hacking of wall is carried out.” (ema.gov.sg, checked 20 Sep 2026) That’s a step worth taking before any renovation work near a gas line, not just a water heater swap.

Electric water heaters: these connect to your home’s electrical wiring rather than gas piping, so they don’t carry the same licensed-gas-worker requirement. That said, any water heater installation is still work worth getting right β€” correct wiring, secure mounting and proper water pressure all affect how well it performs.

If you’d like us to arrange installation or a site check for either type, you can request an installation quote and our team will confirm what’s needed before any work starts. Not sure which type suits your unit? Send our light specialist a photo or floor plan of the space and we’ll help you work out what fits.

5. A quick checklist before you decide

  • Do you already have a gas point where you need hot water? If yes, a gas water heater may be a straightforward swap. If not, factor in that connecting one involves licensed gas work, not just plugging in a unit.
  • How many taps or showers draw hot water at once? Several of our gas models (including the City Energy L10WFE) are listed for multi-point use, while others list a fixed number of usage points β€” check the listing before assuming a unit covers your whole home.
  • Do you want app control, or just a unit that works? Our range includes both a WiFi/app-controlled option and a straightforward non-smart option in the same gas category β€” the smart features add convenience, not extra flow rate or heating capacity.
  • Instant or storage, if you’re going electric? Instant heaters skip the tank and heat on demand; storage heaters hold a set volume (our storage range runs 15L–35L) ready to use. Which suits you depends on how many people need hot water and how close together.
  • Who’s doing the installation? For gas, it has to be City Energy or a Licensed Gas Service Worker β€” factor that into your timeline, not just your shortlist.

FAQ

Can I install a gas water heater myself?
No. EMA states that “all piped gas appliances are required to be installed by a licensed worker”, and that for residential premises gas installation works can only be carried out by City Energy or a Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW). The licensed worker issues a written statement certifying the appliance has been tested and is safe to use. An electric water heater doesn’t carry this requirement. (ema.gov.sg, checked 20 Sep 2026)

Is a gas water heater faster than an electric one?
Both our gas and electric instant models heat water on demand without a storage tank, so neither makes you wait for a tank to fill first. Beyond that, exact heating speed varies by model and household demand β€” check the specific product’s flow rate and usage-point rating rather than assuming gas or electric wins outright.

Do I need a special outlet for a gas water heater?
Most of our gas water heater listings specify a 13 Amp power point for their electronics, though one model lists a wider range β€” check the individual listing (the unit still needs gas piping for the actual heating). Beyond the power point, what’s needed depends on your existing gas connection β€” that’s a site-specific question for City Energy or our team to confirm.

What’s the difference between instant and storage electric water heaters?
An instant electric heater has no tank and heats water as it passes through, usually mounted near the shower. A storage electric heater heats and holds a tank of water β€” our storage range runs 15L to 35L β€” ready whenever you turn on the tap. Instant tends to suit single-point use; storage suits households drawing hot water from more than one point.
